despite its scope and intimidating length, it's pretty engaging throughout. i listened to the audio version (30 plus hours!) which was great - kind of like tuning in to BBC radio, only hearing news about WWI or something.

this is totally one of those books that attempts to present history as something linear 4/5. A History of Computing in the Twentieth Century focuses on the advancements in the processes, methodologies, programs, and techniques in computing.

The selection first elaborates on computing developments in Cambridge, U.S.A., pioneering work on computers at Bletchley, and the COLOSSUS. The Oxford Handbook of World History presents thirty-three essays by leading historians in their respective fields.

The chapters address the most important issues explored by contemporary world historians. These broadly fall into four categories: conceptions of the global past, themes in world history, processes of world history, regions in world history.

Critics heralded the first two volumes A History of the Twentieth Century as "masterly" (Boston Globe) and "deft", illuminating, and fascinating" (Henry Kissenger).

Now, the final work in Martin Gilbert's magisterial and acclaimed three-volume history brilliantly charts the course of the twentieth century's last five decades. Here are gripping narrative accounts of the wars in Korea, Vietnam.

The developments in reading pedagogy over the last century suggested that it is most useful to divide the century into thirds, roughly –, –, and – This division yields two periods of enormous intellectual and curricular activity (the first and third) and a relatively quiet period at mid-century.

In her famous book The Century of the Child (), for example, Swedish feminist Ellen Key imagined the twentieth century as a time when adults would embrace “the right of the child” as the central concern of modern society.

She believed that “all morals, all laws, all social arrangements,” especially marriage and women’s roles. specific cultural and environmental context, especially its historical process. However, Eric Jones’s European Miracle probably comes closest to enunciating the current “mainst ream” position. Jones’s argument is eclectic, and many Europeanists would reject or question many of his claims; but several of his general propositions nonetheless command wide assent.

Editions for A History of the Twentieth Century: The Concise Edition of the Acclaimed World History: X (Paperback published in ), (), (Kindl Cited by: Book Description: The great themes woven through John Lukacs's spirited, concise history of the twentieth century are inseparable from the author's own intellectual preoccupations: the fading of liberalism, the rise of populism and nationalism, the achievements and dangers of technology, the continuing democratization of the globe, and the limitations of knowledge.

The 20th century was the century of nationalism, mass democracy, large-scale industrialism, and developments in communication and information technology beyond the reach of any 19th-century imagination so far as magnitude is concerned. The history of the book has its roots in bibliography, librarianship, and the intersections of social, cultural, and material history.

It has emerged in recent decades as an academic discipline with its own undergraduate and postgraduate university courses, scholarly journals, monographic series, conferences, and research centers. It is methodologically diverse and interdisciplinary, situated. Edgerton concludes his book with the melancholy observation that 'only satirists could do justice to this turn of events'.

This is, overall, a very fine book. Its argument, well supported by a wide range of material and much learning, makes for a new and persuasive interpretation of British history.

Critically assessing the historical accuracy of this claim, Martin and Holloway suggest that nostalgia for a barrier lost in fact tells us more about the emergence of an autonomous and agential fetus and dramatic changes in norms regulating women’s conduct during pregnancy in the late twentieth by: The last twenty years of the twentieth century witnessed a momentous shift in economic power and commercial activity from the Atlantic to the Pacific region, making Japan the second largest national economy in the world. To investigate the history of marketing practice, scholars often turn to a method known as periodisation.
